The Portus Castle

A charming medieval village on the edge of town with historic stone architecture, perfect for a scenic pause and photo. Today, the Episcopal Palace of Portus is owned by the religious congregation of the Sons of Saint Mary Immaculate, who acquired it in 1930 and established their seminary there.

Its doors are open to visitors who venture here driven by curiosity or faith. Within the ancient fortified enclosure, there is the tiny church of Saints Hippolytus and Lucy. A place of worship important not so much for its size but because it houses the relics of the patron saint of Fiumicino, the martyr Saint Hippolytus, considered the first bishop of the diocese.

Imperial Harbours of Claudius and Trajan

Built by the emperors Claudius and Trajan, these ports were the heart of Roman maritime trade, enabling the transportation of vital goods for the empire, such as grain, wine, and oil.

Although it was a great engineering project, the Port of Claudius faced problems related to the silting of the canals and the difficulty of access for large ships. Due to the continuous deposition of sediments in the basin, the port gradually became less usable for maritime trade, which was rapidly growing in volume.

Emperor Trajan, therefore, decided to build a new, larger, and more modern port to solve these problems.

Oasis of Porto

A peaceful natural reserve with a massive hexagonal lake, originally constructed by Emperor Trajan as an ancient Roman dock, that now attracts a variety of wildlife. Visitors can spot numerous bird species and even observe deer roaming freely within the reserve.

Necropolis of Porto

In the Isola Sacra area of Fiumicino, you can explore the Necropolis of Porto, taking a fascinating journey into the past. This archaeological site, dating from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD, holds an ancient cemetery that tells the stories of life and death of those who lived in the port area of Rome.

Within it, you’ll find various types of burials, from simple common graves to elegant chamber tombs, many of which are decorated with frescoes and inscriptions. Some of them feature symbols related to the sea, such as anchors and ships, a tribute to those who spent their lives sailing the waters of the Mediterranean: the tombs of the ancient sailors of Fiumicino!

Step back in time: discover the ancient ruins of Ostia and the Medieval Castel of Julius II

Just a short journey from Fiumicino, Ostia Antica offers a fascinating glimpse into an ancient Roman city.

The archaeological site is home to remarkably well-preserved ruins, where visitors can explore a variety of structures that reveal the everyday life of its inhabitants. Among the most intriguing discoveries is the thermopolium, an ancient tavern where locals would gather to drink wine, a precursor to modern-day inns.

The site also features fullonicae, ancient laundries where workers washed and dyed fabrics. You can also admire beautifully preserved tombs and even enter houses where frescoes still adorn the walls such as “The House of the Painted Vaults,” “The Insula of the Muses,” “The Insula of the Yellow Walls,” and “The House of Lucceia Primitiva,” which preserve not only polychrome frescoes but also true mosaic carpets that decorated the various rooms of the homes.

Right in front of the archaeological site stands the charming Medieval Village of Ostia Antica, a place that seems suspended in time. Passing through the grand gateway, you’ll be immersed in a magical atmosphere that transports you back centuries to the heart of the Middle Ages. Stroll along the cobblestone alleys, discover the tranquility of the Basilica of Saint Aurea, and be captivated by the Castle of Julius II, a masterpiece of Renaissance military architecture. Its three towers, connected by a single rampart walk, dominate the landscape, while the moat that once surrounded it, fed by the waters of the Tiber, adds to its grandeur.
